General Information

Do the parents have to do any teaching?

Class Information

How am I kept informed of my student's progress?

Students receive a progress report in December, and a final report card in June. In between these dates, there is much dialogue between the parents and teachers regarding the student's progress in class. Teachers are always just a phone call away if the parents have any questions.

Is there homework?

Yes, there is. To make sure students are keeping up with the homework assignments, some classes begin with a brief quiz covering last week’s homework assignment. Students that don't perform well on these quizzes will be encouraged to visit a workshop for extra help.

Are there quizzes and tests?

Yes, there are. Tests are usually every 4-6 weeks, and quizzes occur in between the tests. Tests and quizzes are taken in class and graded by the teacher. The teacher will work on any weaknesses revealed by test results either in workshops or private tutoring (no additional charge).

Are there vacations?

Yes, there are. We take two weeks off for Christmas, two weeks off for Spring Break and a week off for Thanksgiving. For the list of vacation dates visit the Academic Calendar.

Do the students do experiments?

Yes, we do experiments in all of the science classes.

Do students have to keep a lab notebook?

Lab notebooks are not mandatory from the teacher's standpoint. If students want to keep a lab notebook, there is guidance on how to do so.

What are the workshops all about?

Included in your tuition is 10 hours of workshop time. The workshops provide an environment for students to work out homework problems from their class. There are always teachers and tutors at the workshops ready to help if the student encounters a problem. Supplementary material is also available at these workshops for extra practice.

The workshops are optional; however, students are encouraged to take full advantage of these facilities. It is a great atmosphere to interact with other homeschoolers, and get help with math and science homework. In some cases, I will insist that certain students be brought to the workshop for extra help. This occurs if students do not perform well on quizzes or tests. It is important to get help at this point before the student falls behind. For more information on these resources, visit the Workshop page.

What time are the workshops?

Workshops are from 12:00 to 2:00 Monday through Friday.

Is private one-one-one tutoring really free?

Yes it is. If your student still needs help after a class and a workshop, then we will be happy to work with your student one-on-one. Furthermore, if your child seeks more of a challenge. These one-on-one times can also be used. Our goal is to make sure all students learn as much as they can no matter how much extra time we spend with them.
